Katy Music Teachers’ Association is pleased to present our three grant recipients:  Nicoletta Sarabtidis, Cameron Vhalkamp, and Spencer Taylor.  These students were chosen by Brett Nelsen, Cinco Ranch High School Orchestra Director, and Brandon Amison, private string instructor to receive the first ever KMTA String Outreach Grant.  The grant was provided jointly by Music Teachers’ National Association and KMTA to encourage string students to continue music study, reach out to the community, and excel in leadership in their school orchestra program.

Recently, these students participated in the holiday concert provided by the Cinco Ranch High School Orchestra program.

These students are slated to perform in recital for the Katy Music Teachers’ Association meeting in April.  In addition, they have been busy auditioning for All-Region and All-State Orchestras, and learning solos for the upcoming UIL Region Solo and Ensemble Contest in February. They are also members of the Texas Music Teachers’ Association Student Affiliate.

KMTA is grateful for the collaboration of Mr. Brett Nelsen, director of Cinco Ranch Orchestras.

The cooperation between public school directors, private teachers, and accompanists can only make for a better music education for these bright, young students. Thank you to Brett Nelsen, Brandon Amison, KMTA, and MTNA for enabling these musicians to achieve greater levels of success!

KMTA OUTREACH

Editor’s note:  this is a bit outdated, but vital anyway!

Making a difference!

KMTA outreach

I would like to report to you about two of our members who are making a difference in the world through KMTA’s outreach funds.

Although KMTA does not have a TMTA grant this year, we kept the funds for matching that grant in the budget to help deserving students who need financial assistance.

Brandon Amison has applied for up to $270 .00 dollars to cover fees and expenses

for Grace Wojan.  Grace is a promising cello student at Mayde Creek High School for which Brandon is providing free lessons.  Kudos to Brandon for reaching out to her.

Dawn Ferrier is working with the Make-A –Wish foundation providing piano and voice lessons to Jamie, an 8 year old cancer patient who requested these lessons as her wish.  Their family has exhausted all monetary funds and resources (including funding from Make-A –Wish foundation) on her medical care.  Dawn is teaching her free of charge and KMTA will be providing funds up to $250.00 to cover the cost of her music books and a keyboard.  Although Jamie is quite ill and hospitalized much of the time, Jamie is loving her lessons with Dawn.  Dawn is finding the experience incredibly humbling and feels that she is getting as much or more out of the experience as Jamie.  What a profound testament that this child has chosen to fill what may be her last days with music.

Kay Lowry wrote a wonderful blog article about Jamie that can be found

here: A Little Girl’s Musical Wish

Just want to make you aware of the great things our organization is doing and I

Know you will want to join me in thanking Brandon and Dawn for their willingness to reach out on behalf of KMTA.

Musically Yours,

Sue Lieberman

MUSIC’S ORIGIN

I found this little blurb in the Houston Chronicle in the “Earthweek” section:

“Musical talent in humans and other creatures appears related to needs to move as synchronized groups in avoiding danger, one researcher says. Matz Larsson, senior physician at Sweden’s Örebro University Hospital says musical traits have been engendered by the need for some species to coordinate sounds that briefly prevent them from hearing predators and other dangers. Such behavior favoring evolutionary success is typically rewarded with the release of the ‘feel good’ chemical dopamine in the brain”.

I found this fascinating! What are your thoughts?

Introducing Collaborative Piano

IMG_1071 IMG_1073 Dr. James Cho

At the Katy Music Teachers Association General Meeting on February 17, 2016, Dr. James Cho and his wife performed and introduced our music teachers to collaborative Piano through Suzuki String Repertoire.  It is something that we, as private music teachers, may not always include in our lessons but can be important for the students to learn to listen and play collaboratively with other students.

Dr. Cho took us through various selections of classical music that we could combine our students to play together.  The Katy Music Teachers enjoyed some wonderful excerpts of pieces that could be played with violin and piano.  It was a wonderful class and performance by Dr. Cho and his wife.

On March 9, 2016 at the General Meeting of the Katy Music Teachers Association, Sergey Kuznetsov gave a masterclass working with two students of teachers in the association. It was a wonderful opportunity to watch a master teacher teach and positively critique the students!

BIOGRAPHY

Born: 1978 – Russia

The Russian-born pianist and music pedagogue, Sergey [Sergei] Kuznetsov, was born to a family of musicians and started his musical education at the age of 5 at the Moscow Special Gnessin School of Music (Music School affiliated to the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire), and in 1998 was admitted to the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire to the class of an outstanding professor Mikail Voskresensky, graduating in 2001 with distinction. Since 2001, Sergey perfected his performing skills at postgraduate courses with Oleg Maisenberg in Vienna University of Music and, since 2003, at Moscow Conservatory with Mikhail Voskresensky. In 2003 he was awarded his Diploma with High Distinction. In 2002 Sergey received the prestigious Lili Kraus Scholarship at TCU (Fort Worth, Texas) and commenced his Artist Diploma studies with Professor Tamás Ungár. After winning a conspicuous scholarship, Sergey was widening his education under the guidance of Joaquín Achúcarro at Dallas Southern Methodist University. Currently, Sergey is a DMA (Doctorate Degree) student at University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles under the guidance of a legendary professor Daniel Pollack (Piano). Sergey also studies composition and electro acoustic media at USC.

During his studies in the USA, Sergey Kuznetsov has always enjoyed teaching and advocating classical music amongst various groups of people. In 2003 he organized series of educational projects in collaboration with Van Cliburn Foundation. The mission was to bring classical music to children whose parents can’t afford education. The project had become so popular in Texas that Sergey had to travel around the state with his lectures and concerts. In 2005-2007 he worked as a Teaching Assistant in Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Several of his students have won national and international prizes that supported their way towards studies in music. Sergey’s approach in piano pedagogy is to show his students how great and large the world of music actually is. His knowledge of piano repertoire is impressive after taking a special advanced piano repertoire course at USC. He uses methods and books published in Russia, Europe and the United States, incorporating music theory, technique exercises, ear training and composition into his lessons. Sergey is a member of MTAC and MTNA.
